Dog jerky treats alert and safer alternatives

When it comes to dog jerky treats, it’s always best to err on the side of caution – meaning don’t buy ready-made. For a while now there has been a steady influx of recalls due to thousands of dogs falling ill and nearly 600 pets having died. This problem stems as far back as 2007, and sadly, it still continues today. Personally, we would not give our dog Kaba commercial jerky; it’s too risky, especially when they’re so easy to make!

Unless stated most jerky’s are brought in from China, this is a good enough reason to abstain from them. It’s not just jerky we need to be concerned about, but all dog foods brought in from China. May be the Chinese have some sort of vendetta against us westerners?

Know your dog jerky treats

The problem is nobody, including the FDA officials fully understand the root cause of these dog’s illnesses and deaths. Officials need to know why jerky is poisoning them before issuing product bans. Of course, it wouldn’t be fair to ban unsuspecting brands, but when there are links to specific jerky, it’s a different matter.

This is very saddening because whilst the FDA are dithering, dogs continue to suffer. Basically, the FDA and other officials know that some dog jerky treats are sourced from China, but they don’t do anything about it. They have, however, been very kind to publicize a warning about these mystery contamination’s, and dog food companies have issued recalls.

The good news is we know of a few brands that have announced recalls, and these are:

  • Waggin’ Train Jerky Treats or Tenders by Nestle Purina
  • Canyon Creek Ranch Jerky Treats or Tenders by Nestle Purina
  • Milo’s Kitchen Home-Style Dog Treats by Del Monte Corp
  • Chicken Grillers home-style dog treats by Del Monte Corp
  • Chicken Tenders Dog Chew Treats by Publix Stores
  • Cadet Brand Chicken Jerky Treats by IMS Pet Industries
  • Duck or Chicken Jerky Teats by Dogswell
  • Chicken Jerky by Joey’s Jerky

It’s also known that some dog have had possible reactions from other brands such as:

  • Chicken and Duck jerky treats by Kingdom Pets
  • Waggin Train Chicken Jerky Tenders by Purina

Of course there could always be more brands added in the future so please keep a watchful eye on this delicate subject. You could also take a look at ‘The dreaded dog food recalls‘ to get a better understanding.

Warning signs of ingesting contaminated jerky

When a dog has consumed infected jerky they may suffer from a variety of symptoms. These can be decreased appetite, lethargy, diarrhea and/or vomiting. More severe case can result in kidney failure or disorder and/or gastrointestinal bleeding.

In some tests, unapproved antibiotics have been found. Additionally, a cocktail of drugs has previously been detected.

Getting to the bottom of these dog jerky treats

The problem is, your dog will not always experience an immediate sickness. Some dogs have become severely ill months later. Of course, at that stage, it’s hard to prove if the dog jerky treats were responsible. Still, it’s wise to use caution and start making your own.

Chinese manufacturers do not care what they put in dog jerky treats or kibble. As far as the Chinese are concerned, dogs are beasts to be killed, they think dogs should be on a dinner plate. Well, it’s fair to say there are some very sweet and caring Chinese people that actually do love dogs, but they’re few and far between!

Watch out for package labeling, manufacturers can give you false information. If you’re not aware of some terminologies, you could be sucked into believing a lie. For example, USA companies can buy food from China; they’ll prepare, package and label these foods as if all have come from the USA. Therefore, made and packaged in the USA does not mean the food was sourced in the USA. At present, it is not illegal to state made and packaged in USA, even though the ingredients are sourced from another country.

How to make your own dog jerk treats

It’s invariably safer to make your own dog treats even if it’s just diced meat or cubes of cheese. You will always know what the ingredients are and as a result your dog will be safe and well. Why buy dog jerky treats from the supermarket when you can easily make them yourself? You probably think it time consuming, but honestly jerky’s can be made quite quickly. You can make all kinds of dog jerky treats by thinly slicing chicken, beef or lamb, etc.

Add some suitable flavoring or leave then plain. Put them onto a tray and either dehydrate or cook in the oven at 275 for at least one hour. There, that’s no hassle at all, while jerky is cooking you can put your feet up and relax.
